The material used to make vintage leather jackets are of course leather, which is typically dark colored such as brown and grey.  Nowadays, it also comes in light colors like light yellow and blue.  Actually, it serves several purpose like for fashion, military or motorcycling.

Using leather goes back as far as the Paleolithic times.  Animal hides are used for clothing.  Cave paintings shows man wearing animal skins to keep them warm.

During the ancient Egyptian times, leather was also used in different aspects of life.  Excavated tombs in Egypt shows proof that leather was used for different things; these can be seen in their paintings.  These includes shields and harnesses for their military, clothing and other tools needed for survival.  The Greeks and Romans also utilized animal skin for the same purpose.  While leather was introduced to Europe by the Romans.  After its introduction to Europe, the British monks became an expert in making leather.  Leather was also used for writing and sailing in Europe.

The leather industry quickly developed in the next few centuries and the production of leather jackets suddenly increased.  Leather jackets were also popular during the World War.  It has been immortalized in films such as “The Wild One” which starred Marlon Brandon whose character wore a leather biker jackets throughout the movie.  Nowadays, almost everybody owns a vintage motorcycle jacket.  A person’s taste and personality is shown through the clothes they wear, in this case a leather jacket.

Leather is used as fashion accessories nowadays, these includes belts, pants, jackets and shoes.  Because of their popularity, some animals have become endangered species because their skins are so in demand to be made into these accessories.  Examples of such are crocodiles whose skins are used to make boots.
