Earlier one would find boys in private schools wearing blazers that were teamed up with short length pants and long socks. Today, even girls who attend private schools and boarding schools have blazers as a part of their uniforms. The fabric that composes a blazer may differ from linen to woolen to flannel, etc.

It was not until the late 1970s that vintage blazers were widely worn also by women. The film Annie Hall triggered the fashion for women to wear blazers. One could also see that even through the film Working Girl, there is a clear concept of the eighties style of womens blazers. By the eighties all women would be wearing blazers to their respective official work places. Blazers came in different colors, had buttons and big shoulder pads. Women usually wore vintage blazers made of wool flannel, cashmere or lighter fabrics such as cotton, polyester or rayon. Womens blazers were more fitted than mens blazers. Today we find that women usually wear jackets that are either short in length or are fitted. This style was first worn in the 18th century, and the look has changed very little since that time. A longer version of the peacoat, called a bridge coat, was worn by naval officers. When a peacoat is outfitted with epaulettes and and gold buttons, it is known as a reefer. Only officers would have been allowed to wear this garment.

The first peacoat was worn by a young man who joined the British Navy. The recruits father, who was a Dutch farmer, had made a jacket to keep him warm while serving at sea. The wool for the coat came from the young mans three favorite sheep on the farm. The sheep had been dubbed Pauline, Eleanor, and Andrew. For this reason, the son had referred to it as his "P.E.A. coat."

When the new sailor reported for duty at Brighton, a petty officer on duty noticed the coat and asked where he had gotten it. The petty officer, Jeffrey Stanislaus Fox, liked what he saw, and the British Navy ordered a supply of 400 of vintage peacoats from the farmer. From that point on, Naval officers were issued this garment as part of their uniform.

Vintage peacoats continue to be popular fashion items for both men and women. They can be bought from military surplus stores as well as brick-and-mortar and online stores. You can choose a classic design or go for a more updated look. Some designers have reinterpreted the peacoat for evening wear for women by adding ruffles and making the silhouette more fitted. The material was first used to provide some kind of protection from the damp for British officers serving in the trenches, but then went on to seduce popular imagination and the world of fashion design.

The typical vintage trench coat, as first designed by Thomas Burberry, used gabardine fabric, and was water resistant. As WWII came to a close the coats were extremely fashionable and became an alternative to long wool coats. The price of a lined vintage leather coat, assuming no additional historical merit, will be appreciatively less if placed in a consignment shop in Miami instead of Maine. Customers are accustomed to paying bargain prices at swap meets, but are more accustomed to more substantial prices at boutiques with well-edited selections.

6. If after assessment, the prospect of sale does not seem to be profitable, there are additional points to consider. Fashion is cyclical. The style, if not popular now, may have a comeback.
