Vintage cocktail dresses come in different lengths.  The length of the dress usually depends on the current fashion trend of the moment.  There are cocktail dresses whose length is just above the knee.  There are also some cocktail dresses known as tea length cocktail dress which stops at two inches above the ankle.  While there are some that touches the ankle which is called “ballerina length.”  It is usually related to the evening gown, and it is hard to tell the distinction between the two.  They are also made with different cloths like satin, silk and chiffon, which are the fashionable choice.

When going to an event or party, it is important to wear the appropriate dress for the occasion.  A lot of people are clueless on what to wear when they get an invitation to one.  One usually gets anxious about over or under dressing for the said event.  The invitation must be used as a clue to determine what dress would be apt for the occasion.  If the invitation arrives by email or through telephone, most likely the event is casual therefore one must dress casually.  In this case, you can match a vintage cardigan with a pair of vintage riding boots and you will be just fine.  If the invitation is received by mail, most likely the event will be more formal so one would need a vintage cocktail dress.

For a benefit event or one held by a charity association, wear a cocktail dress to the event.  When one gets an invitation, make sure to read it because one will surely get a clue on what kind of attire to wear to the occasion.  Expect to read phrases like “casual dress,” semi-formal attire” or “formal wear required” written on the invitation to le you know the dress code for the event.  But if still not sure about what to wear, then call the telephone number that is on the invitation to inquire about the dress code for the occasion.

Avoid wearing a sequined gown to a cocktail party since it is more appropriate for formal occasions like weddings and anniversary parties.  Everything about the vintage cocktail dress that will be worn conveys a message.  The length of the dress to be worn can be from mini length or until above the ankles.  Even the kind of material used for the dress, whether satin or silk, adds character to the dress.  Flattering jewelry, handbags and other accessories must also be worn to put the finishing touches.  And of course the shoes should match vintage cocktail dresses to complete the look.

The color of the cocktail dress should also go together with the occasion.  You can even substitute a cocktail dress for one of the vintage prom dresses that you were considering.  Choose floral prints, light pink, sky blue, pale green and yellow during the summer season.  While during winter, pick out gray, crimson, black, dark brown and dark blue vintage cocktail dresses.  Lastly, choose a vintage cocktail dress that fits right, meaning not too tight or cut too low, to ensure that no untoward incident would happen in the party.

With vintage prom dresses, you don't need to be armed with a purse full of money for your impending prom night. You may be lucky enough to find a dress as gorgeous as the one I found quite unexpectedly. Once I stumbled onto a gorgeous vintage little number. I wasn't actually looking for a dress. There was no occasion. Vintage is like that somehow.

Just as important as the vintage prom dress is the girl wearing it. Whatever your style, be it innocent 1950s girl next door or vampy vixen, your hair, makeup, and accessories as well as your unique personality all play a part in your unforgettable prom night. High school proms are all about fashion, and designers nowadays are always trying to come up with the hottest designs for teenagers to make a big impression on this big day. One thing that many girls are doing now is to stand out from the crowd by wearing a vintage prom dress. Prom dresses in the 1950s were typically full length dresses, and were romantic and innocent. 1. Kensington Market – rather an odd place to look for clothes I admit yet I found the most adorable pair of pink and black tweed pumps there once for only $5.00. Quite unexpected and a lovely little find.

2. Vintage Clothing Trends– on Queen Street in Toronto, one of my favorites without a doubt. There are many different styles of dresses for women and girls. Evening/cocktail dresses are only one of the categories. There were two different vintage 1950s summer dresses that caught my eye in particular, pale yellow with a deeper yellow, satin waist band. A fabulous price too, in the $45.00 range. Another favorite of mine was a slinky, sexy, black Lee Jordan 1970s vintage dress with spaghetti straps and a slightly flared skirt. It was very slim fitting and made from polyester, an easy fabric to care for if ever there was one. It retailed for an incredible $28.00!

3. If you have a few hundred dollars to spare and are looking for a goth prom dress, check out Northboundleather in Toronto. This store specializes in, surprise, surprise, leather items that are high quality, stylish and gorgeous. Black leather dresses and separates such as corsets and mini-skirts are always available and very sexy. One of my favorites is a classy, full-length black ladies dress, tight bodice and long, flared leather skirt, SKU #6433, retailing at a reasonable $323.00. One of these styles is the empire line. It has a classic vintage shape which has materials that skim over the bottom half of the body. This is particularly flattering to women who have a pear shape body because it conceals the parts that a woman wish is kept hidden. It was popular during the 70s, characterized by a high waistline that starts beneath the bust and flows to a full skirt. This style is also suitable for petite figures because it creates an illusion of height.

Another style is the ball gown where it has a full skirt that starts at the waist that reaches the floor. This style is perfect for tall women because the style visually cuts the body in half. This also looks very elegant, and can make a woman feel like a princess.
